Music 1 Luciano Pavarotti "Nessun Dorma" Turandot, Puccini

Narrator:             Good morning and welcome to our World Cup Assembly!

(All ‘teams' stand up cheering)

(Narrator blows whistle - everyone sits down again)

Narrator:             As you can see I have everything totally under control. The players are behaving themselves and

Music 2 We are the Champions - Queen (just chorus)

(Enter 8 fans, waving scarves and flags, all jostling and shoving each other, whilst singing ‘We are the Champions')

Narrator:             Those fans! Always letting the side down! (Blows whistle) Now look here! I'll stand for no nonsense today - either on the pitch or off! You lot had better behave or you'll be on the next plane home!

(All fans exit)

Narrator:             So. Let's meet the teams! Let's start with the host nation - South Africa!

(There follows a sequence: first, narrator introducing the team; then the team's fan stepping

forward and delivering information on past win(s); then team standing up and cheering; then narrator

blowing whistle for them to sit down, before introducing the next team)

(South African team stands up and cheers)

Narrator:             And - Uruguay

Uruguay fan:      Two time winners - in 1930 and 1950!

(Uruguay team stands up and cheers)

Narrator:             Italy!

Italian fan:           Four time winners - in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006!

(Italian team stands up and cheers)

Narrator:             Germany!

German fan:      Three time winners - in 1954, 1974 and 1990!

(German team stands up and cheers)

Narrator:             Argentina!

Argentina fan:   Two time winners - in 1978 and 1986!

(Argentina team stands up and cheers)

Narrator:             France!

French fan:         Winners of the 1998 World Cup!

(French team stands up and cheers)

Narrator:             Brazil!

Brazilian fan:      Five time winners - in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002!

(Brazilian team stands up and cheers)

Narrator:             And last, but by no means least - England!

English fan:         Winners of the 1966 World Cup! And strong favourites for 2010! (Turning to team, triumphantly) Am I right? Or am I right?

(English team stands up and cheers)

Narrator:             (Blowing whistle twice) Enough! Enough! How many more times do I have to tell you, it's not about the winning! It's the taking part that counts!

South African fan:            So, where are the other 24 teams that are taking part this year?

Narrator:             So, here's the thing. We are a school, hosting a World Cup. Now, for those of you who are good at maths out there, it won't take you long to work out - one class simply doesn't have enough players! So, we have taken the seven past winners of the competition, plus this year's host country, South Africa, to represent a mini World Cup - held here at ...... School. I can promise huge excitement

(All teams stand and cheer)

Narrator:             (Blowing whistle, then glaring at the teams and fans) And PERFECT BEHAVIOUR - on and off the pitch!
