Description

Coronation Assembly for Key Stage I

This script was written for a class of 15 but can easily be adapted to numbers above or below this number as the speakers are numbered Pupils 1 – 13, with Charles and Camilla graciously appearing alongside! The narrator’s role should be taken by the class teacher – to keep necessary order! Yes, these ‘subjects’ are at times less than ‘reverent’ and our king (and queen) consequently have some moments of ‘discomfort’ to deal with! Let’s just say, they don’t need many warnings about what happened to another former Charles!

Duration: around 10 – 15 minutes but with plenty of opportunities to ‘add on’ as suggested in the Performance Notes.

Sample Text:

Pupil 6:                 Will the king and queen still be wearing their crowns?

Pupil 7:                 I’ve heard they’re rather heavy!

Camilla:                I hope not! Mine, by the way, is called the Queen Mary’s Crown

Charles:                And mine is the St. Edward’s Crown

Pupil 8:                 Both kept safe at the Tower of London.

Camilla:                Yes, they are both a bit big to be put in our drawers!

Narrator:             And a serious security risk, keeping them in your bedroom!

Pupil 9:                 A bit harder to steal from the Tower of London!

Charles:                I’d like to see anyone try! Off with their head, if they dared!

Narrator:             Yes, the Tower of London would be the best place to do that, wouldn’t it, given its history!

Charles:                So. Are you going to tell me why Charles I lost his head?

Camilla:                And please. No more bad jokes about him being careless!

Narrator:             Well, the simple explanation is that he upset his people.

Pupil 10:               Really? How did he do that?

Narrator:             He got airs above his station – thought rather too much of himself

Pupil 11:               And didn’t do what his people wanted?

Narrator:             Absolutely! You could say, he learnt his lesson the hard way.

Charles:                By losing his head? Shocking!
