Cast: 30. Duration: Around 15 minutes (not including music suggestions)
Sample Text
Music 1: Come Fly with Me – Frank Sinatra
(Children file in, taking seats facing the audience – 2 rows of 15 children)
Narrator: Good morning and welcome to our assembly on
(Loud sound of duck quacking, as duck ‘flies’ onto stage, swooping around, showing off fine air skills)
Duck: Flying? Did someone mention ‘flying’? (Swirling around) Look no further. I am an example of the best flying machine around!
Narrator: (Looking through notes) Machine? You’re no machine! And you’re certainly not on my cast list today.
Duck: (Indignantly) What?
Narrator: You see, this is an assembly on The History of Aviation – not ducks!
Duck: (Furiously) What do you mean, not ducks? Have you any idea where the word ‘aviation’ comes from?
Narrator: (Looking through notes) Er um ..
Duck: I thought not! Aviation actually comes from the Latin word ‘avis’ meaning ‘bird’! So, what else do you want to know?
Music 2: Fly Like an Eagle – Steve Miller Band
(Enter Dragonfly, flying gracefully around)
Dragonfly: And I’m a dragonfly – one of many insects that can fly!
Duck: (Laughing) You certainly don’t fly like an eagle!
Dragonfly: (Angrily) Well, that’s because I’m a dragonfly!
Duck: (Laughing) Dragonfly indeed! What kind of a name is that?
Music 3 – Theme Tune to Batman
(Enter Bat, swooping around)
Bat: Am I a bird? No, I’m a bat!
Narrator: (Looking at notes) So, what are you doing here?
Bat: Well, I’m the only type of mammal capable of continuous flight.
Music 4 – Crazy Horses – The Osmonds (just up to ‘Crazy horses flying everywhere’)
(Enter Pegasus, swooping around)
Pegasus: (To bat) You? The only type of mammal capable of continuous flight? I don’t think so! Have you never heard of the great Pegasus? (Swirling) That’s me!
Narrator: A flying horse? Oh, please!
Music 5 Fly Away – Lenny Kravitz
(Enter Daedalus and Icarus, dancing and singing to the song – pointing to Dragonfly on third line of lyrics ‘Just like a dragonfly’ – Dragonfly starts dancing and then whole cast joins in – with exception of Narrator, looking on in mixture of horror and disbelief)
