Cast of 24 plus Narrator (this role to be taken by the Class Teacher)

Tale 1 The Tale of Peter Rabbit

Group I

• Peter Rabbit
• Flopsy
• Mopsy
• Cottontail
• Mother Rabbit
• Mr. McGregor

Sample Text:

Mother Rabbit:                 (Tutting and wagging her finger) Naughty boys!

(Flopsy, Mopsy and Cottontail cross their arms in front of them, like their mother, scowling and nodding their heads, smugly)

Mr. McGregor:                  (Shaking his rake in anger) Bad, bad bunnies!

Narrator:                            Oh dear! What did they do?

Tale 2 The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin

Group II

• Squirrel Nutkin
• Twinkleberry (brother)

• Mr. Brown (the owl)

Narrator:                            Sounds quite respectful to me?

Tale 3 The Tailor of Gloucester

Mouse 1:                            We made these for the mayor

Narrator:                            And I’m so glad to see such a well-behaved cat.

Tale 4 The Tale of Benjamin Bunny

This tale is combined with the first tale.

Four groups – one for each tale, Group I doubling up for the fourth tale which just has Benjamin as an additional cast member.

Duration

Around 10 minutes reading time but this can, of course, be expanded, to allow more performance.

Of the four assemblies/class plays (see below) this first one is the simplest and shortest – written for lower Key Stage I as reflected in the very short simple lines given to each character. If the teacher, who takes the role of narrator throughout all 21 tales (all 4 parts), wishes to release some of his/her lines to the more able/more confident in the class and add further text from the tales, then that is, of course, down to the teacher in charge. The idea of these scripts is to provide a template that can be edited according to the ability of the children.
