Vegetables Assembly for Key Stage One or Two or class play, although written for Key Stage I, could also be used by Key Stage II – lower end of.  If the text is deemed too simple for the purposes of Key Stage II, more information could easily be added on – I just thought KS II children might appreciate some of the humour!

Cast of 25 (Vegetables!)

This number can easily be increased or decreased depending on the number of children in the class.

Duration – around 10 to 15 minutes not including music suggestions.

This script was great fun to write – characters like Pea (happy!), Potato (don’t mention crisps!), and a highly sensitive Brussels Sprout – positively jumped off the page! But whilst raising a few laughs along the way, it also delivers a very serious message about looking after our health – having a good diet.

This is part of a series on healthy living.

Sample Text:

Music 3 Boom Boom Pow – Black Eyed Peas

(Pea performing brief dance to this song, whilst Narrator looks on in bewilderment)

Narrator:             Stop! What do you think you are doing? What has this got to do with vegetables?

Pea:                      Everything! Don’t tell me you haven’t heard this song by Black Eyes Peas?

Narrator:             (Spluttering) Of course I have but

Pea:                      (Interrupting) So, just thought I’d mention them – Black Eyed Peas!

Narrator:             (Sighing) Oh, very well! As long as these black-eyed peas actually exist – other than as pop stars, of course?

Pea:                      Oh yes, they do. They’re also called black-eyed beans. Though not as fast as our runner bean friend over there!

(Pea points to Runner Bean and falls about laughing at his own joke. Narrator marches over and makes him sit down)

Narrator:             (Tutting) I think we’ve heard quite enough from you! Black Eyed Peas, indeed! (Pointing at Pea) You’re lucky not to have got a couple of black eyes, from me!

Potato:                Oh, don’t be too hard on him.

Narrator:             OK. As long as you promise not to mention what you sometimes end up as.

Potato:                You mean, crisps?

Narrator:             (Clutching his/her head) Shh! What did I just say? This is meant to be all about healthy eating habits. And crisps are certainly not that!

Potato:                Sorry! Oh dear. I’m such a potato head at times!

(Whole cast laughs)

Narrator:             You certainly are!  Well, as we all seem to be enjoying ourselves (pauses)

(Aside to audience) rather too much, if you ask me

Let’s hear some more funny vegetable names.

Radish:                 There’s egg plant!

Runner Bean:     And fat hen!

Narrator:             (Exclaiming) No! You cannot be serious!

(Both Radish and Runner Bean nod their heads)

Narrator:             They’ll be telling me there’s a vegetable named after an elephant next!

Yam:                     There is! The elephant foot yam!
