World Cup Assembly 2022
Here we go again! Another world cup – the 22nd to be precise! Very fitting for year 2022. Here’s hoping our men do as well as our women (no pressure!) But it is only sport after all, … isn’t it?! Maybe someone needs to speak to that English fan as red cards from the ref – our unfortunate narrator – seem to have little to no effect!
A fun ‘run through’ all the information you need to get started with this world sporting event – plenty of facts mixed in with the usual abundance of good humoured banter!
Cast of 34 – including all 32 teams (cast size easily adjustable by doubling up) Duration: around 20 minutes not incl. music
(English fan starts singing “It’s coming home! It’s coming home! It’s coming, Football’s coming home”. Referee rushes over and shows him the red card again)
Referee: What did I say to you? You might think that England is the home of football but there are a few other countries here today, beside yourself, in case you hadn’t noticed!
English Fan: Sorry! I’m just so excited!
Referee: Well, you’re just going to have to curb that excitement! Now please do try and control yourself! And no more singing, please!
English Fan: But what about 1966?
Referee: Yes, yes, let’s hear about that 1966 victory. Seems like a long time ago!
England: Though let’s not forget our girls ‘bringing it home’ this summer!
Referee: They certainly did you proud! What a victory for girl power! But let’s not get distracted – we’re here to talk about the men’s game today! Back to 1966 and how the English men brought it home!
English Fan: England 4 Germany 2! What a final! Germany scored the first goal, then we scored twice, then in the last minute Germany came back and scored an equalizing goal. Which took us into extra time. But there was no holding Geoff Hurst back – two more goals and we were home and dry!
(Starts singing ‘Back Home’ anthem)
Referee: (Blowing whistle) Stop! Stop! What did I say about singing? Sit down! Now! Next!
Wales: Wales! We are so happy to be here! We reached the quarter-finals in 1958 before being eliminated by eventual winners Brazil. This time we are here to win!
USA: No chance with us around!
