Play 1- Introduction. Speakers: Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, Bertie, Grant & Phil Mitchell, Disraeli

Queen Victoria: Now, now Dizzie. You might have considerably more charm than that awful William Gladstone fellow

Disraeli (muttering) My Whig rival

Bertie: Doesn’t he have any hair?

Queen Victoria: Silence, Bertie. What have I told you about ‘Children should be seen but not heard’?

Play 2 Life for the Poor Speakers :Factory worker, Mine worker, Chimney Sweep, Oliver (workhouse), Artful Dodger (streets), Bobby (Policeman)

Artful Dodger: Now that’s what I call dangerous work! I’d refuse, if I were you.

Chimney Sweep: I did once. I lost my nerve half way up. And you know how my boss helped me out? Only lit the fire under me! Scared me to death but sure got me up that chimney stack in half the time!

Play 3 Social Changes Speakers: Charles Dickens, Lord Shaftesbury, Dr. Barnardo, Orphan, Florence Nightingale, Soldier

Dr. Barnardo: But come, come! You politicians played your part too, in the relief of the poor’s suffering.

Charles Dickens: Yes. Let it not be said that private individuals were the only ones to bring about change. Look at what you (looking at Shaftesbury) and your fellow politicians did!

Play 4 Changes – Medicine and Transport Speakers: Isambard Kingdom Brunel, George Stephenson Navvy, Louis Pasteur, Joseph Lister, Doctor Death (fictional character)

Stephenson: Yes. You drove yourself to an early grave! You had already done more than enough to impress us, but you just didn’t know when to stop!

Brunel: Well there was my magnificent Great Western ship.

Stephenson: Shame about that explosion and fire on board that nearly killed you!

Navvy: And didn’t do much for your marketing either. Only 7 passengers signed up for that first trip to New York!

Stevenson: Yeah. I can’t see children racing through the pages of your book! No pirates? No treasure? No chance!
