Unit 13: Changes Since 1948

Play 1 The 1950s Speakers: Queen Elizabeth II, Martin Luther King, Edmund Hillary, Walt Disney, Roger Bannister, Elvis

Disney (muttering): Yes. We’ve already said they got there first! Shame about the wee doggie that went up on Sputnik II.

Queen Elizabeth: What? A dog? Not a corgi, I trust!

Elvis: No. (Singing) It weren’t nothing but a hound-dog!

Hillary: And not a very lively one, when it got back! Poor ol’ Laika. Dead on arrival!

Play 2 The 1960s Speakers:Yuri Gagarin, Neil Armstrong, Nelson Mandela, Mick Jagger, John Lennon

Bobby Moore

Jagger: Yes, they might have won the competition. But they nearly didn’t have a trophy to lift! A few months before, the world cup got nicked!

Armstrong: It wasn’t that Biggs fellow was it? Him and the other Great Train Robbers?

Lennon:  No. They never did find out who took it. But luckily Pickles found it!

Mandela: Who was Pickles?

Lennon: A dog! He found the world cup when he was out digging in a garden. Bit of an odd-shaped bone! I bet he was disappointed!

Play 3 The 1970s Speakers: Queen Elizabeth II, Sid Vicious (Sex Pistols), David Bowie (Spiders from Mars), Mark Spitz (American Olympic swimmer), Olga Korbut (Russian Olympic gymnast), British soldier

Vicious (spitting): God save the Queen!

Queen: Well, thank you. But by the looks of you, I’m not the one who needs saving! What are you wearing?

Vicious:  Straight from the Kings Road, London! Height of fashion!

Play 4 1980s Speakers: Margaret Thatcher (Maggie), Princess Diana (Diana, formerly Lady Diana Spencer), Ronald Reagan (Reagan), Mikhail Gorbachev (Gorbachev), Bob Geldof (Geldof), Boy George

Diana: Was that why you tried to set up Star Wars?

Geldof: Yeah. A lot more successful as a movie than as a way of protecting the U.S. from Russian nuclear attacks!

Maggie: Yes, Ronnie. You did seem a little paranoid at times.

Reagan: And with good reason. Just look at what happened at Chernobyl.

Play 5 The 1990s Speakers :  Queen Elizabeth, Tony Blair, John Major, Victoria Beckham, Britney Spears, Robbie Williams

Queen: Can’t see the appeal, myself. You wouldn’t catch me jetting off all over the world. Far too many things to do home here. Like looking after my family.

Major: Oh dear. I was wondering when that tricky subject might come up. 1996 will not go down in her memoirs as being the best ever!

Queen: Indeed. 1996 was the year that my family had not one, but two divorces to cope with.
