Great British Writers School Assembly Extract:
Teacher: Ah! The movies! Is there a single great book that hasn’t been transformed onto the big screen?
Harry: Well, there’s nothing wrong with that providing they stick to the original story. I think they did a really good job with my author’s books. And just as Alice’s favourite is based around a brave young girl, mine is based around a brave young boy.
Teacher: Good to see we’re getting a balance here! And I don’t suppose your choice of hero, like Alice and her choice of heroine, has anything to do with your name, has it?
Harry: Harry? Nah! Another coincidence, miss!
Teacher: So, let’s see. Who could this hero possibly be?
All 5 children: (Together) Harry Potter!
Teacher: Well, there’s a surprise! So, come on Harry. Tell us about your favourite author.
Harry: Her name is J.K. Rowling.
Teacher: At last! A female writer!
Harry: Well, yes but she wasn’t able to publish under her name of Joanne Rowling for fear that boy readers would be put off!
Teacher: I don’t suppose it would matter what she called herself now!
Harry: I doubt it. She’s sold over 400 million copies of her books and is now said to be the twelfth richest lady in the world!
Teacher: Good for her! And doesn’t she have British Rail to thank for that?
Harry: Well, the idea for her books did come to her whilst sitting on a train between Manchester and London!
Teacher: So, what is it you like about these books?
Harry: I love the mix of magic and real life. Being a wizard doesn’t solve all Harry’s problems in his everyday life. He has to work through the pain of losing his parents to the wicked wizard Lord Voldemort, and he has the same friendship problems as the rest of us. He has two good friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger but he has to deal with a lot of things by himself. Like Alice just said about Alice being a great inspiration to her, Harry has been a great inspiration to me! He is so much more than just a wizard. He has huge courage as a human being too – the sort of real hero we can all aspire to!
